What We Do While We Wait

“How are you doing, sweetheart?” 

My mother in love has always been a nurturing and compassionate and sensitive woman. She is always the first one to ask how you are doing. And she really cares to know your answer when she asks. 

I told her I was fine. My typical answer when I don’t want to talk about my feelings. I rarely want to talk about them. To be honest, I am much better at writing how I feel and processing everything that way as opposed to having a conversation with someone face to face and having to truly express my emotions. I hate crying. I hate feeling like I am on the verge of tears. 

“Really?,” She said, at first. “Are you really okay?”

Of course, was my reply. 

“You are amazing. I don’t know how you do it and you don’t complain.” She said.

I appreciated her compliment. I needed to hear it. I needed her encouragement.

Truth is, as comforting as her words were to me in that moment, I don’t really believe I am all that amazing. I choose stone face over emotion most of the time. I lack the patience to deal with all that we are dealing with.

What are we dealing with?

The waiting. 

Six month ago, Dan truly believed it was time to start looking for a church he could pastor. Not as a college pastor or a small group pastor, but a teaching pastor. Senior Pastor. This was huge as for so long, Dan didn’t think the door would ever open because he did not finish his education and obtain his M.Div. 

But, encouraged by the leadership at our church, Dan stepped down from his position at our church, and we have been praying and he has been applying.

We thought one church was going to call us to serve them, but it turned out to be a no. That was a heartbreaker. We fell in love with that church. The people. We could see us living in that community. In that State. We were ready.

Yet, God said no.

And to be honest, I was a little angry and frustrated. I was also tired. 

Our church was extremely generous and helped us for a few months, but now the weight is completely on me to provide with my business and on the generosity of friends. So thankful.

God has been so good to us and has provided our every need. We are not rich in things, but we are taken care of. I could name off all the miraculous to you in complete gratitude of His provision. The fact that I am still able to be at home while we lay in wait is a miracle in itself. 

But, I won’t lie and say that I am energized. I am not. I am tired. Tired of the hustle at times. God has also been doing a major work in my heart about what I should be doing and how to minister and love His people. I am also tired because I am desperate for a place we can stay at for a long time. Our whole family is tired of moving every two years. 

Our children are tired. My husband is tired. I know he so wants to be at a church he can serve at and love on and teach and be there for many, many years. We want that. 

We want to be firmly rooted and planted somewhere.

This season has been a long one. And it seems like it happens in cycles of every two years. It is hard. It is tiring. I don’t share this for you to pity me. Military families go through this far more often than we do. Their struggle is real. 

It has been a struggle battling the discontentment I feel often, and trying to seek joy in the things that truly matter: being home with my family. More time with Dan since he is home more. More time with friends. More home cooked meals. Less busy. 

More moments together that I know will become more of a fight to have once Dan finds the church we will serve at. Our family will always be first. We will fight for it, but it will be a struggle. It always is for ministry families. 

I want to complain and cry and scream and tell everyone I know about how I hate the process of pastors applying to churches and how long it takes to get hired.  I have to fight the urge to be dramatic. It comes naturally to me to be resentful and critical. Fighting it and laying down my urges to lash out have to be a daily thing.

And so, in the meantime, I will let God do His job. I will do mine: pray and abide. 

I know God has a place for us somewhere. We feel confident in His calling of us to ministry in the local church. So I will do my best not to stomp my foot in impatience. (This is so hard for me! Ha!) 

“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever.” Ephesians 3:20-21 ESV 

Whatever my feelings are right now about this whole waiting thing, and about the calling on my husband’s life, I know and believe that God is able to do far more than I could ever ask or think of. 

So when I say we want to be rooted and planted, and to serve the local church, our greatest desire, God can go even beyond that. 

Which is my very hope.

Make the Shift in Your Fitness and Your Life

It takes a single shift in your thinking to jumpstart your health and fitness journey.

It is not easy! I totally get that! So many of us are hearing that it is so hard to get in shape.

Must Have Equipment for Your Home Gym

I have been working out at home for the last 7 years and have not had a gym membership in almost 10 years…even when I wasn’t working out!  Haha!

When I decided to begin my own Be a Size You journey and take care of myself, I knew that a gym membership would have been ideal, but with two young kids and not a ton of time, I really believed that I would have just set myself up for failure by trying to fit in the driving time to the gym. So my husband and I decided that creating a simple space for me to workout at home would be optimal. Plus, I could workout on my own time and not compete with others for machines etc.

I started out really simple: A yoga mat, a couple of weights ( 2 pounds, 3 pounds and 5 pounds!), one resistance band, a workout DVD (and some YouTube), and an old pair of shoes.  That’s it!

For those of you who are just beginning your journey and you are looking to begin creating your workout space at home, trust me when I say you don’t need all the bells and whistles.  You just need a good attitude, willing to spend a little bit of money for tools, and a tiny bit of space to store your tools (notice I didn’t say a ton of space…I will explain why in a bit.)

Here are some of my must haves for your home gym, and a few extras that I think would be great to have if you have additional room in your budget. Most of these can be found on my fitness shopping site, so if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to shoot me an email. I am here to help!

Beachbody on Demand: Yes. This is necessary. It provides every single fitness program Beachbody has ever created, including the nutrition guides and tips for those programs.  Plus, if you do the annual membership (and get it as a bundle with Shakeology or Beachbody Performance) you save a ton of money.  I am all about having the right tools, but saving money!

Resistance Bands:

I love resistance bands because they offer a different kind of resistance than weights.  Generally, dumbbells are used primarily for upper body exercises and some lower body, but I love that resistance bands can help you build muscles and work on your entire body.  It is a versatile tool and I think it is a must have for those who are creating a home gym. Plus, they aren’t that expensive. Yes!!!!!

Balance Ball:

If you can’t afford a workout bench, and you are really wanting a gym like atmosphere as well as a way to do the strength training exercises that you are used to with gym equipment, a balance ball is a must have. It is great for core work, balance work, resistance work, and also makes a great chair to use while you are working (so you can still work on your core, and work on your posture!)

Yoga Mat:

A yoga mat is needed for Piyo or Yoga or any low impact exercises that require you to be on the floor the majority of the time.  I workout on carpet, but I still enjoy having that cushion barrier between my body and the floor (because, germs and bugs LOL!)

Weights in different pounds.  I don’t have a photo of these, but you can find any weights on Amazon, Target, sporting goods store.  Really, just buy a couple in different weight (one light and one heavy) and you can add as you build muscle.

Now I will share some bonus tools that, if you have some extra room in your budget or you are looking to add to your home gym, you should definitely grab them!

Bowflex Selecttech Weights:

This is on my wish list.  They are not cheap, but if you are looking to eliminate the amount of weights you have to just one adjustable system, these are a must have!!! Amazon always has a good deal running for these, so I highly recommend checking them out there.  I am trying to convince Dan to let me buy these for my birthday next month LOL.  Yes please!

Plyometrics Jump Mat:

A Jump mat would be really good to have, especially if you workout on a hard surface like your garage or you have hard wood floors.  Honestly, plyometrics are hard on the body and especially on your knees. Springy shoes and a springy mat helps a lot with the impact of plyometrics, and can protect you as well.  Obviously, you can always modify and not fully jump through your Plyo workouts, but if you are choosing to jump, this is a great workout tool.

Foam Roller:

I actually believe a Foam Roller should be a necessity in your home gym (think a really inexpensive massage that you can have all the time!) but a lot of people don’t realize the benefits of foam rolling at first. However, for those of us who have been working out our bodies for awhile, foam rolling hurts so good!!  Muscles get tight and sore and they need some TLC, so rolling over those places that you have worked hard helps to heal them and recover.

Strength Slides:

Strength Slides were created to add additional resistance to your Piyo workouts, but really, if you want to take your lower body workouts to the next level, then these are really fun to have! It won’t feel fun when you are doing them, but you will love the results when using them. Perfect for hard floor and carpet!

And that’s it for now!!!  Would love to hear about some of your favorite home gym tools that you have.  Do you have a large area for your workouts? Or is your space small? Mine is small. You don’t need a ton of place to store your equipment, but grabbing a few inexpensive baskets or buckets so they can be placed out of site (for your peace of mind) is useful as well.  I live in a small home right now, so I have a closet designated for my equipment, but when I lived in our trailer on the ranch, I used those big plastic bins and stored them underneath our trailer in one of the compartments. Totally possible. You just have to be willing to be creative.

If You Could Be or Do Anything….

Last night, the Harper’s hung out at Angel Stadium for the annual Freeway series and it was awesome! 

Sean is a HUGE Dodger fan and Madi is an Angel fan. We are a house divided folks! But don’t worry. We don’t take our rivalries too seriously. It is all in good fun. 

It was so incredible to be around so much blue and red! It was packed! There was so much noise and shouting for our teams. I asked Sean if he could do or be anything growing up, what would it be.

His answer was to play professional baseball. With the Dodgers. 

Sean lives and breathes baseball. He loves it. It makes him sad when the season is over, whether for the major leagues or for little league. He wakes up thinking about it. He plays all the time. He works on his skills. He asks his dad to go to the park so they can practice. He wants to fulfill that dream so bad! It is awesome to watch. 

It got me thinking about my own dreams. And yours! 

Actually, to be fair I didn’t really think about all that until this morning. Because last night I was too busy bragging about the Angel’s crazy win!

If you could do or be anything, what would it be. What are your gifts? What do you want to share?

God has been doing a major work in my heart lately about my dreams. If I could do anything, I literally would just write and share all the time. 

I want God to teach me so much. To constantly be showing me new things about Himself and helping me grow in Him, and then I want to go and write it out. I want to inspire and move women toward Jesus. 

I get tired of the hustle, too. This feeling of constantly performing. It has been a major conviction in my life recently. Not because I have been dishonest, but because I am always trying to prove what I am doing. I need to remember that I don’t have to prove myself to anyone. God has already defined who I am. He has already crafted me for good work. I am not defined by the workouts I post. By how often I eat clean. My what I wear. None of that.

He has done it all. He is enough.

So it really excites me with all that He is doing in my heart. That heavy weight of perfection and striving is slowly being lifted. It feels good.

And it feels good to dream too.

So, what would you want to do? What drives you? What gets you excited? What steps will you take to make it happen?

Why You Don’t Need More Inspiration or Motivation

Inspiration is everywhere. Have you noticed that? Whether we are being inspired to create a beautiful home, or new delicious recipes that will wow your family and friends, or outfit inspirations, we are literally inundated with inspiration and ideas that are meant to move us to action.

Pinterest is a dreamers haven. But I have also found it is the place where dreams go to die.


Because being inspired is not the same as action.  Honestly, it is easy to be inspired. Dare I say, it is even easy to be motivated.

Action, on the other hand, is harder. Because that means you have to make a decision to move or do something based on what you have seen.

If what you saw inspired you enough to move, and you actually took action, then fantastic! It worked!!!

But, if you are constantly being inspired but nothing happens….then you don’t need anymore inspiration. 

You need an action plan. You need to move.

People like to chat about being inspired. But being inspired costs you nothing. Literally. It is free. I post on social media every day my workouts, or about something I have read that encouraged me, in order to inspire and encourage all of you. And it is all free for you. I don’t charge for my inspiration. I give that away because I know it can benefit the heart of the reader.

But, if you come to me wanting my help to take action, I will require YOU to put some skin in the game. That means, you will have to invest your time and dollars in order for you to reach your desired goal. Action requires skin in the game. It does not require more motivation or inspiration. Those help to keep momentum. Heck, we all love an “Atta Girl!” Now and then! No shame in that!

But if you aren’t willing to move and put some skin on, then you are wanting to achieve anything. 

Are you ready for this? I say this in love. Completely. Because I love you.

You just want to be inspired. You aren’t looking to change. You don’t want to change, yet. You are not there yet. 

“But why do I have to spend so much money to get healthy/build my business/get training/etc.

Because. If you put into it, it will matter more to you. You will care more. It will hurt more because it cost you something. My journey was not free. It still isn’t. I invest regularly into my health, my relationships, my home, my business, because it matters to me! I have skin in this. It matters.

I know that part is painful. We don’t like to give any part of ourselves if we aren’t sure if it will work out. There are no guarantees, really.

But what if. Just what if you decided to take that inspiration, invest in it, and be surprised by the outcome. 

You may discover it was worth it.

Newport Dunes Getaway

This last week, the hubby and I took advantage of the kids being with Gramie and Papa for camp and headed off to Newport Dunes!

Newport Dunes is this awesome resort where you can rent bungalows or hook up your trailer for a relaxing and fun vacation by the bay. It is absolutely beautiful and it is truly one of our favorite places to go for Vacation. It also has one of the best 4th of July Fireworks shows I have ever seen, so it is definitely a place you want to visit!

You can paddleboard, swim, kayak, visit local beaches (Newport Beach is literally 5 minutes) and also check out some amazing local eateries.

Fashion Island is a spot we love to visit as well when we are in a shopping mood. Well, honestly I am always in a shopping mood. Dan….not so much! There are a ton of amazing stores and restaurants in this mall. More high end than most malls, but we love it! And they have an Anthropologie. Yaaaassss! 

Dan and I have spent most of our time simply relaxing, eating, and laying out at the Beach. I did want to share a couple of eateries that we discovered that we loved and thought you would too!

Dory Deli in Newport Beach. We just happened upon this spot because we were really hungry, but we wanted something different than just burgers and fries, or tacos. Dan suggested it because he thought the name was funny. So glad we ate here! I got the Kale Caesar and Dan got the Ruben Sandwich. We also split a bowl of their Clam Chowder and OH MY GOSH. So good! I don’t know how old they are, but I did see that they will have a full bar soon. They had quite a bit of selection when it comes to salads, sandwiches, sides, even coffee and they have brunch on the weekends. I loved my salad. I think next time I will be daring and try their Seared Ahi Salad. Because it sounds so good! 

R+D Kitchen at Fashion Island. Dan had eaten here before with a friend quite a few years ago and he said all he could remember was the burger. He said it was that good. So I wanted to eat there.

Y’all, the menu is not very big. And it is a bit pricey. But worth it! He got the Cheeseburger and a side of fries for us to split (because always say yes to fries) and I grabbed the Chicken Thai Noodle salad (I think that is what it was called.) Huge winner. 

I mean, what? Doesn’t that look amazing? It was so good you guys! There were noodles, bits of Mango, carrots, chicken, cilantro, jicama, sesame….and the dressing was this light dressing that tasted peanutty, but it wasn’t heavy. It was amazing. Our waiter recommended it and I jumped all over it. So delicious! 

I am serious. If I could get a job where they could send me to restaurants to eat and share my thoughts, yaaassss. Sign me up.

Dan and I basically kept it chill. It was Shaun Week for my workouts this week, so I made use of Newport Dunes fitness room. Side note to Newport Dunes: you need more weights folks. Eight pounds and ten pounds are not gonna cut it. I know you have mostly runners visiting, but yeah….let’s do better for the fitness room. 

And a whole lot of beach time.

We leave tomorrow and I am sad to go, but overall, it has been amazing and much needed. So grateful.

Hope In Front Of Me

Lately, I have been having heart breaking conversations with friends and those I have connected with via social media. 

Loss, marriage struggles, job loss, financial struggle, parenting, and so much more.

It seems walking out our faith takes a lot out of us. It is hard some days.

And for a lot of us, it may feel like those days are never going to come to an end.

Music has always been an encourager in my life. I know I have mentioned before, but when a song comes on with just the right words that match what my heart is feeling, it is like I am strengthened or moved to action. It is like God allows powerful words into my life that will remind me of the hope I have.

We were cleaning the house today, and the song by Danny Gokey “Hope In Front of Me” came on.
I was touched by these words:

There’s hope in front of me

There’s a light, I still see it

There’s a hand still holding me

Even when I don’t believe it

I might be down but I’m not dead

There’s brighter days still up ahead

Even after all I’ve seen

There’s hope in front me

You might be down, but girlfriend…you are not dead!

The same God who created the heavens and earth sees you and loves you.

The same God who can raise the dead to life can raise you from whatever valley you find yourself in. As painful as it is and hurt as you may be feeling right, God absolutely 100% hears your cries for help. It may not come in the time you wish, but He has not left you alone. 

I remember those long nights when my heart was so broken, I was so unsure of what tomorrow would bring. I wasn’t sure I could take much more. But sister, that is the point. We cannot rely on our own strength in hard times. It is in His strength and power that we are able to overcome. He did not call us to be wonder women. He called us to be His. 

And when we allow our brokenness and pain to be laid bare at Him who can heal, you see the glory of who He is and just what He is capable of doing in the lives and hearts of His precious daughters. 

So you are not dead. There is hope for those of us in Christ.

Feed Your Mind

I am a big believer that leaders are readers.  I believe that if you are looking to grow in any area, reading and studying are the way to go.

Growing up, I always considered myself an independent learner.  I fared much better doing research projects than group projects or sitting in a classroom because more often than not, it was on subjects that I was not interested in.

I still have not used chemistry. Well, except for baking because exact measurements matter, but other than that….nope!

But I will spare you my thoughts on education and we will get to the part I am most passionate about: Feeding your mind.

I shared on Facebook my current favorite books that I think y’all should grab and dive into.  Most of these are personal development/nutrition/leadership/ministry related.  If that is not your thing, no worries, I will try to update this week even more books that I have read and love.

Are You Ready for Summer?

Can you believe it is June already? I can’t. It really does feel like 2017 is just flying by.

My kids get out of school really soon, and we are all so ready to head to the beach and enjoy lazy summer days.

But, I am also ready to challenge myself even more with my health and fitness. I have been loving my 21 Day fitness program so far and I am already starting to see results from just 7 12 days in.  That is huge!!!! I will be taking photos soon, so stay tuned so you can see my progress.  It has inspired me and I think it will inspire a lot of you!

Protein Energy Bites


Did someone say protein?

I hate buying protein bars. Personally, I think they are overpriced and really not that good. If I can make them myself, I will.

One reason why I am thankful for Shakeology is for the fact that it is complete nutrition in a shake, and a great powder to use for “baking”……only this recipe is a no bake.

No raw eggs. No weird ingredients, just goodness.

This is a standard recipe that many of us coaches have used, but you can easily switch it up and make different versions of these protein bites to please your palate.

My kids love these and while they can last a week, they won’t.

You will need to practice serious self control. Ha!

Protein energy bites

3 scoops/packets of Vanilla Shakeology or Vegan Shakeology 

1/2 cup raw honey

1/2 cup unsweetened shredded coconut

1/2 cup organic almond butter (or nut butter of choice)

1/2 cup semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips

Place all ingredients into a mixing bowl and mix together well. Roll dough into small balls (should make roughly around 12 balls) and let sit in the freezer for 10-15 minutes to set.

Then store in a container for up to a week.
