Fashion Confidence for the Average Gal

When I was in my 20’s, I wasn’t exactly the most fashionable of people. My husband liked to joke that I really only wore jeans, a turtleneck sweater and these faux snakeskin boots. Like, everyday. I also didn’t really wear makeup except for the occasional lipstick and some foundation, blush, and mascara. It was like a foreign language to me. And I was in pageants! (Clearly, not Miss USA material! 😂)

Lucky for me, my husband thought I was amazing enough to marry and we have been married for nearly 13 years. Gals, you don’t need to be a beauty queen to snag a guy.

Because before I dive into my fashion post, let me remind you.

Real beauty and confidence comes not from the latest trends and advertisements.

It comes from God alone. He has already defined beauty. It doesn’t change with the seasons and it doesn’t have a “color of the year” that you must adhere to if you want to “IN.”

How word is clear on what a beautiful and confident woman looks like.

“Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Proverbs 31:30

“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news…” Isaiah 52:7

A woman who chooses to trust in the Lord, to praise Him all the days of her life, who chooses to be a rare jewel in a society of imitation. That is far more lovely than any fashionable outfit you could come up with.

Now, fashion is fun. I love clothes and shoes and accessories. I am inspired by the prints and colors that I see regularly on social media and in my favorite shops. It is okay to be inspired. It is okay to get creative.

For those of you who feel like you have no idea what style is or how to feel put together because all you feel you are just a mom with her kids, doing the mom thing: you can still do the mom thing, love your kids, and feel cute. I used to be where you are. I found what works for me and I am here to share with you!

1. What do YOU like?

Do you? Do you want something that is easy to put together without a whole lot of thought? Do you prefer pants or dresses? Muted or bold colors? Accessories? A lot or a little? What inspires you? When you look at fashion photos, what are you drawn to? Usually, it is catches your eye and you admire it, chances are, that is part of your “style” so go ahead and replicate it!

2. Invest in a few good pieces.

I believe investing in a couple of pairs of really good jeans is worth it. You will wear them a lot, so having a good solid pair that can take a beating is worth it! A good jacket and/or vest and a little black dress is always a win as well. Most tops and dresses and even shoes you can get for relatively inexpensive (hello Marshall’s and Nordstrom’s Rack and Target!) If you do have to buy some new things, don’t feel like you have to buy everything at once. It is okay to buy what you can, and then go from there.

3. Get inspired by fashion magazine and social media pages, but allow them to be the rule.

You set the tone for your own fashion. You like what you like. Don’t allow anyone to tell you that it isn’t in fashion, that it isn’t designer, that they don’t like it. If they wouldn’t wear it, great. But you are not dressing for them. You are dressing for YOU. You are dressing with confidence that fits your lifestyle, your beliefs, your ideals, your family.

I wear a lot of Lularoe and Jane.com stuff and other small businesses. Why? Because their clothing fits my style and lifestyle. I am a work at home mama with two school age children in sports and a husband in local church ministry. My style and fashion choices work for me. You do you, boo.

4. Enjoy the process.

Your fashion choices WILL change as you get older. They are constantly developing. That is just the way it is. I am obsessed with wearing dresses right now, but who knows, I might be over it in a couple of months and just want to wear shorts and a cute t-shirt and converse and head to the beach! But who cares! Again, do you!

  1. Nordstrom rack might be my love language and then I am an REI girl but I do love some lularoe 😍 I dislike trends because I cannot keep up and I like old fashioned jewelry or pieces that have been repurposed. I’m afraid of high heels but love a great wedge…and I feel most like my self in a good pair of sneakers or cute flat sandals.

  2. Love it! I think fashion is all about what YOU feel best in. If it makes you feel good wearing a good pair of sneakers or sandals, you do YOU. God confidence will radiate from within. Our clothes are just a fun piece to the puzzle of who we are. Love you!
